Overview
Your Companies House presenter details must be entered in BrightTax before you can submit Year End Accounts to Companies House. These details identify your practice as an authorised presenter and are required for all iXBRL accounts submissions.
Before You Begin
- You must have administrator permissions in BrightTax to access System Settings.
- You will need your Companies House presenter ID and authentication code. These are obtained when you register as a presenter with Companies House.
- If you are not yet registered as a Companies House presenter, register at companieshouse.gov.uk before proceeding.
How to Enter Your Companies House Presenter Details
- Click the cog icon in the top-right corner of BrightTax to open System Settings.
- Go to Account Information > Companies House Details.
- Enter your presenter ID.
- Enter your authentication code.
- Click Save.
✔ Tip: Your presenter details are stored at the organisation level in BrightTax. All users who file accounts from your organisation will use the same presenter credentials.
Troubleshooting
My Companies House submission is being rejected
- Check that your presenter ID and authentication code are entered correctly — these are case-sensitive.
- Confirm your presenter account is still active with Companies House. Accounts can become dormant if not used for an extended period.
- Check that the company registration number on the client record in BrightTax matches exactly the number held at Companies House — including leading zeros (e.g. 00530630, not 530630).
I do not know my presenter ID or authentication code
- Log in to the Companies House WebFiling portal at ewf.companieshouse.gov.uk to retrieve your presenter details.
- If you cannot access the portal, contact Companies House directly to reset your credentials.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need Companies House presenter details to submit Corporation Tax returns?
A: No. Corporation Tax returns are submitted to HMRC, not Companies House. You only need presenter details for filing accounts (iXBRL) directly with Companies House.
Q: Can I have more than one presenter ID configured in BrightTax?
A: Currently, BrightTax supports one set of Companies House presenter credentials per organisation. If you file on behalf of clients using multiple presenter IDs, contact support for guidance.
Q: How often do I need to update my Companies House details?
A: Only when your authentication code changes or if you have registered a new presenter account.
