Overview
Directors and other officers must be linked to a Year End Accounts task in BrightTax for two purposes: to populate the signing information on the balance sheet and financial statements, and to enable the Officer Data section where loans to directors are recorded. This article covers both.
Step 1 — Create the Director as a Client in BrightTax
Before a director can be linked to a Year End Accounts task, they must exist as an Individual client record in BrightTax.
- From the Dashboard, go to the Client List.
- Switch the toggle to Individual.
- Click Create Client and create a client record for the director, including their full name.
- Click Save.
✔ Tip: If the director is already set up as an Individual client in BrightTax for their personal tax return, you do not need to create a new record — use their existing client record.
Step 2 — Link the Director to the Year End Accounts Task
- Open the Year End Accounts task.
- Go to the Associated Clients tab at the top of the task.
- Click Add and search for the director by name.
- Select the director from the results and click Save.
- The director will now appear in the Associated Clients list and their name will be available for selection in the signing information sections.
Step 3 — Set Report Signing Information
The Report Signing Information determines whose name appears as the signatory on the balance sheet, officer signing report, and filleted balance sheet.
- Open the Year End Accounts task.
- Expand the CT navigation toolbar using the toggle switch.
- Click the Template tab.
- Click the Report Signing Information icon.
- The Report Signature Information window opens. Select the signing director from the dropdown — this is populated from the Associated Clients you have linked.
- Set the signing date.
- Click Save.
⚠ Important: The signing director must be linked in the Associated Clients tab before they will appear in the Report Signing Information dropdown. If the dropdown is empty, return to Associated Clients and add the director first.
Officer Data — Loans to Directors
The Officer Data section within the Year End Accounts is used to record loans to directors. These entries feed directly into the relevant balance sheet notes.
- Open the Year End Accounts and navigate to Officer Data from the Table of Contents.
- Switch to Edit mode.
- Enter the loan details for each director as required.
- Click Save. The figures will automatically populate into the relevant notes to the accounts.
Troubleshooting
The signing director is not appearing in the Report Signing dropdown
- The director must be added to the Associated Clients tab on the YEA task before they appear in the signing dropdown.
- Confirm the director has been created as an Individual client in BrightTax first.
The director's name is not appearing correctly on the printed accounts
- Check the director's name is entered correctly on their client record in BrightTax. The name on the accounts is pulled directly from the client record.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I have more than one signatory on the accounts?
A: The Report Signing Information currently supports one primary signatory. If you need to reflect multiple signatories, add the additional names in the relevant notes to the accounts manually.
Q: Does the director need to be set up in BrightTax for every set of accounts?
A: Once a director has been created as a client record, they can be linked to any number of Year End Accounts tasks without being recreated.
