| Overview |
Once Year End Accounts have been completed, reviewed, and iXBRL files generated, you can submit them directly to Companies House from within BrightTax. This article covers the submission steps, what to check before filing, and how to handle common submission issues.
| Before You Begin |
- iXBRL files must have been generated via Check Accounts & Generate iXBRL Files.
- The report signing information must be completed — including the signing director and date.
- Your Companies House presenter details must be configured in System Settings > Account Information > Companies House Details.
- The company registration number on the client record must exactly match the number held at Companies House — including leading zeros (e.g. 00530630 not 530630).
| ⚠ Important: A mismatch between the company registration number in BrightTax and the number held at Companies House is the most common cause of submission rejection. Double-check this before filing. |
| How to Submit Accounts to Companies House |
- Open the Year End Accounts task.
- Confirm Check Accounts & Generate iXBRL Files has been run and no errors remain.
- Review the finished accounts — check the balance sheet, profit and loss, and signing information.
- From the bottom toolbar on the YEA Summary page, click Submit to Companies House.
- A submission window opens — review the submission details including the company number, accounting period, and iXBRL file to be submitted.
- Select whether to submit Full Accounts, Filleted Accounts, or both.
- Click Submit.
- BrightTax will transmit the accounts to Companies House electronically.
- A confirmation message will appear with a Companies House acknowledgement reference.
- The submission is recorded in the Submission History tab.
| ✔ Tip: For small companies filing under FRS 102, you typically submit Filleted Accounts to Companies House (omitting the profit and loss account) and Full Accounts to HMRC via the CT return. Confirm the filing requirements with the client before submitting. |
| Full Accounts vs Filleted Accounts |
| Account Type | What It Includes | Submit To |
|---|---|---|
| Full Accounts | Balance sheet, P&L, notes, directors' report | HMRC (via CT return) |
| Filleted Accounts | Balance sheet and notes only — P&L omitted | Companies House (for most small companies) |
| Troubleshooting |
The submission is being rejected by Companies House
- Check the rejection reason in the submission response — Companies House provides a specific error code.
- Most common cause: company registration number mismatch. Verify the number on the client record matches exactly what Companies House holds, including leading zeros.
- Check that your Companies House presenter credentials are still active in System Settings.
- Confirm the iXBRL files are current — if accounts were edited after the last Check and Generate, regenerate the files before resubmitting.
The Submit to Companies House button is not appearing
- Confirm iXBRL files have been generated — the submit button only appears after a successful Check and Generate.
- Check that you have Companies House presenter details configured in System Settings.
| Frequently Asked Questions |
Q: Can I submit accounts to Companies House and HMRC at the same time?
A: No. Companies House submission is done from BrightTax Accounts Production. HMRC submission is done via the Corporation Tax return — link the accounts to the CT return and submit through there.
Q: What is the filing deadline for accounts at Companies House?
A: Private companies have 9 months from the accounting year end to file accounts at Companies House. New companies have 21 months from incorporation. Late filing attracts automatic penalties.
Q: Can I file amended accounts at Companies House?
A: Yes — amended accounts can be submitted as a replacement filing. Regenerate the iXBRL files with the corrected data and resubmit via BrightTax.
