Overview
BrightTax integrates with Sage to allow you to import trial balance data from a client's Sage account directly into BrightTax Accounts Production. This removes the need to manually re-enter bookkeeping figures when preparing Year End Accounts.
✔ Tip: The Sage integration is one-way — data flows from Sage into BrightTax. Journal adjustments made in BrightTax are not sent back to Sage automatically.
Before You Begin
- The client must have an active Sage account with their accounts data for the relevant period.
- You must have access to the client's Sage account with appropriate permissions to export data.
- The client must exist as an Organisation in BrightTax with a Year End Accounts task created.
- You need administrator access in BrightTax to configure integrations.
How to Connect Sage and Import Trial Balance Data
- Open the Year End Accounts task in BrightTax for the relevant client.
- Switch to Edit mode using the toggle in the bottom-left corner.
- In the Accounts Production module, locate the trial balance import option.
- Select Sage as the data source from the import options.
- Authorise the connection to your Sage account when prompted — you may be redirected to Sage's login page.
- Once connected, select the Sage organisation and the accounting period you want to import.
- Click Import to pull the trial balance data into BrightTax. The figures will populate the Extended Trial Balance automatically.
✔ Tip: If you are prompted to authorise BrightTax access to Sage, this is done via Sage's standard OAuth process. You will be redirected to Sage's login page and back to BrightTax once authorised.
After Importing
Once the trial balance data has been imported:
- Review all imported figures in the Extended Trial Balance to confirm they are correct.
- Make any required adjusting journals in BrightTax.
- Complete the accounts — director linking, report signing, notes, and Check and Generate.
- Year-end adjusting journals posted in BrightTax will need to be entered manually in Sage to keep the bookkeeping records in sync.
Troubleshooting
Sage is not appearing as an import option
- Confirm the Sage integration is available on your BrightTax subscription.
- Ensure you are in Edit mode — the import option is not available in read-only mode.
The authorisation is failing
- Check that the Sage account is active and accessible.
- Confirm you have the appropriate access level in Sage to export trial balance data.
- Try disconnecting and reconnecting the integration from BrightTax settings.
The imported figures do not match the Sage trial balance
- Confirm all transactions in Sage are posted and the period is finalised before importing.
- Check that you selected the correct Sage organisation and accounting period during the import step.
- Ensure there are no unposted transactions or draft entries in Sage that are affecting the trial balance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Which Sage products does the integration support?
A: The BrightTax integration supports Sage Business Cloud Accounting (formerly Sage One). For queries about specific Sage product compatibility, contact BrightTax support.
Q: Can I reimport from Sage after making changes?
A: Yes. Re-importing overwrites the current trial balance in BrightTax with the latest Sage data. Any manual adjustments made directly to the trial balance (not via journals) will be overwritten.
Q: Does BrightTax send journal adjustments back to Sage?
A: No. The Sage integration is one-way. Year-end journals must be entered manually in Sage.
