Overview
BrightTax is a cloud-based platform hosted and maintained by Bright. Your data is stored securely in the cloud and is backed up automatically by Bright's infrastructure. However, BrightTax also allows you to schedule your own additional backups of your organisation's data for your own records and business continuity purposes.
✔ Tip: Because BrightTax is cloud-based, your data is always accessible from any device with an internet connection. You do not need to worry about local hardware failures affecting your data — Bright's infrastructure handles this automatically.
Scheduling a Backup
- Click the cog icon in the top-right corner of BrightTax to open System Settings.
- Go to System > Backups.
- Click Schedule Backup or Add Backup Schedule.
- Set the frequency — daily, weekly, or monthly.
- Set the time of day for the backup to run.
- Click Save to activate the scheduled backup.
✔ Tip: Schedule backups to run outside of working hours — for example, overnight — to avoid any impact on system performance during the day.
Running a Manual Backup
In addition to scheduled backups, you can trigger a manual backup at any time:
- Go to System Settings > System > Backups.
- Click Run Backup Now.
- BrightTax will generate the backup immediately. A confirmation will appear when complete.
Viewing and Downloading Backup Files
- Go to System Settings > System > Backups.
- The list of completed backups is shown with the date, time, and file size.
- Click Download next to a backup to save the file to your local device.
What Is Included in a Backup
BrightTax backups include your organisation's client data, task data, and configuration settings. The backup file can be used to restore data in the event of accidental deletion or to transfer data if required.
⚠ Important: Backup files contain sensitive client data. Store downloaded backup files securely in line with your firm's data protection policies and GDPR obligations.
