| Overview |
By default, the BrightTax Task List shows only active tasks — completed and submitted tasks are hidden to keep the view focused on work in progress. This article explains how to show completed tasks, filter the Task List, and use the status reports for a more detailed view across your client base.
| Showing Completed Tasks on the Task List |
- Log in to BrightTax and go to the Dashboard.
- Ensure you are on the Task List view (selectable from the left-hand menu).
- At the top of the Task List, locate the Show Completed Tasks tick box.
- Tick the box to include completed and submitted tasks in the view.
- The Task List will refresh to include all tasks, regardless of status.
- Untick the box to return to the active tasks only view.
| ✔ Tip: The Show Completed Tasks setting applies to your current session only — it resets to unticked when you log out. If you regularly need to see completed tasks, make ticking it part of your login routine. |
| Filtering the Task List |
The Task List supports additional filtering to help you find specific tasks quickly:
| Filter | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Show Completed Tasks | Includes completed and submitted tasks in the list |
| Task Type dropdown | Filters the list to show only a specific task type — e.g. Individual Tax Return or Corporation Tax only |
| Tax Year dropdown | Filters the list to show only tasks for a specific tax year or accounting period |
| Responsible User | Filters the list to show only tasks assigned to a specific user — useful for managers reviewing team workload |
| Search box | Type a client name to find their tasks quickly |
| Using Status Reports Instead |
For a more structured view of task statuses across your entire client base — particularly for CT returns and ITRs — the dedicated status reports are more useful than the Task List filter:
- CT Return Status Report — go to Reports > CTR Status for a filtered view of all CT returns by status.
- ITR Status Report — go to Reports > ITR Status for a filtered view of all Individual Tax Returns by status.
These reports allow you to filter by tax year, responsible user, and status, and can be exported to Excel for further analysis.
| Frequently Asked Questions |
Q: Why are my completed tasks not showing even after ticking Show Completed Tasks?
A: Check that the Task Type and Tax Year filters are not restricting the view to a period where no completed tasks exist. Try clearing all filters and reticking Show Completed Tasks.
Q: Is there a way to permanently show completed tasks without ticking the box each time?
A: Not currently — the Show Completed Tasks setting resets each session. Use the status reports (CTR Status, ITR Status) for a persistent view of completed returns.
Q: Can I delete completed tasks from the Task List to keep it tidy?
A: Tasks can only be deleted after they have been discarded. Completed and submitted tasks cannot be deleted — they remain in the system as a permanent record. Use the filters to keep your active view focused on current work.
