Overview
The Year End Accounts workspace in BrightTax uses a spreadsheet-style grid. By default, the column and row headers (such as A, B, C and 1, 2, 3) are hidden to give a clean accounts view. If you need to locate a specific cell by its reference — for example C96 — you can switch the headers on using the Toggle Headers button.
How to Show Column and Row Headers
- Open the Year End Accounts task in BrightTax.
- In the toolbar at the top of the accounts workspace, locate the Toggle Headers button — this is on the right side of the second toolbar row, after Visibility Groups.
- Click Toggle Headers.
- Column letters (A, B, C…) will appear along the top of the grid and row numbers (1, 2, 3…) will appear along the left side.
- You can now identify any cell by its column letter and row number — for example, cell C96 is in column C, row 96.
- To return to the standard clean view, click Toggle Headers again to switch the headers off.
✔ Tip: The Toggle Headers button works as a toggle — click once to show headers, click again to hide them. The setting does not affect the accounts content or any saved data.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I clicked Toggle Headers but nothing changed — what should I check?
A: Ensure you are in the accounts grid view rather than the iXBRL or notes view. Toggle Headers only displays headers on the main spreadsheet grid.
Q: The cell reference I need is in a section that appears blank — why?
A: Some cells in the Year End Accounts grid are hidden when they contain no data or when the relevant notes have been collapsed. Use the Collapse/Expand controls or check the Visibility Groups settings to ensure the relevant section is visible.
Q: Can I use keyboard shortcuts to navigate to a specific cell?
A: Standard browser keyboard shortcuts apply within the accounts grid. Press Ctrl+Home to go to the first cell, or use the Find bar to search for content within the accounts.
