| Overview |
BrightTax supports detailed breakdown entry on SA100 income boxes — allowing you to record line-by-line detail behind a summary figure, just as you would on the paper return. This release extends breakdown support to 10 additional boxes, bringing BrightTax to full parity with BTC Software for SA100 drill-down data entry.
| ✔ BrightTax previously supported drill-down detail on 16 SA100 boxes. This update adds 10 more, covering a wider range of income sources including bank interest, foreign dividends, pensions, incapacity benefit, other taxable income, pension scheme payments, and Gift Aid donations. |
| What Is Detailed Breakdown Entry? |
For many SA100 boxes, the figure entered is a summary total — for example, the total bank interest received across all accounts in the year. Detailed breakdown entry lets you record the individual items that make up that total — each bank account, each source of income — with supporting detail such as the amount, date, description, and a reference. This provides a full audit trail behind the summary figure and matches the depth available on the paper return.
| Newly Supported Boxes — July 2026 |
| SA100 Box | Description | Detail Available |
| Box 1 | Bank and building society interest | Amount, date, description, reference — for each interest source |
| Box 6 | Foreign dividends | Amount, tax deducted, date, description, reference |
| Box 11 | Pensions and retirement annuities | Amount, tax deducted, date, description, reference |
| Box 13 | Incapacity benefit | Amount, tax deducted, date, description |
| Box 17 | Other taxable income with allowable expenses | Amount, allowable expenses deductible, date, description |
| TR Box 1 | Registered pension scheme payments | Amount, related amount, date, description |
| TR Box 5 | Gift Aid donations | Amount, related amount, date, description |
| TR Box 9 | Shares gifted to charity | Amount, date, description |
| TR Box 10 | Land and buildings gifted to charity | Amount, date, description |
| WFP Box 1 | Winter fuel payment | Amount, date, description |
| How to Enter Detailed Breakdown |
- Open the Individual Tax Return in BrightTax and switch to Edit mode.
- Navigate to the SA100 section containing the box you want to add detail to.
- Click the drill-down icon or breakdown link next to the box — this opens the detail entry panel.
- Click Add Item to add a new line.
- Enter the detail for each item — amount, date, description, and reference as required for that box type.
- Add further lines as needed until all items making up the summary total are recorded.
- Close the detail panel — the summary total in the SA100 box updates automatically from the line items.
- Save the return.
| ✔ Tip: The summary figure in the SA100 box is calculated automatically from your line items — you do not need to enter the total separately. If you edit or delete a line item, the summary updates immediately. |

| Frequently Asked Questions |
Q: Do I have to use the detailed breakdown for these boxes?
A: No. You can enter the summary total directly into the SA100 box without using the breakdown. The breakdown is optional but recommended where you have multiple sources contributing to the total.
Q: Does the breakdown data get submitted to HMRC?
A: The summary total from the SA100 box is submitted to HMRC as normal. The line-by-line detail is stored in BrightTax for your records and audit trail but is not separately transmitted in the submission payload.
Q: Can breakdown lines be rolled forward to next year?
A: Individual lines can be marked for roll-forward where the income source is recurring. Lines marked No Roll Forward will not appear in the next year's return.
Q: The drill-down icon is not showing on a box I need — why?
A: Not all SA100 boxes support breakdown entry. If the icon is not showing, the box is currently summary-only. Contact support if you believe the box should support breakdown.
