Overview
Individual and Organisation client records in BrightTax hold the same contact, administrative, tax and business details you record in BTC desktop. Each client also has an Address Details tab, where you can keep multiple addresses — each with its own type, date range and default setting.
✔ If you are moving your practice from BTC desktop, you can now keep a complete client record in BrightTax without referring back to desktop for contact, administrative or tax details.

How to Add or Update Client Details
- Open the client from the Client List.
- Switch to Edit mode using the toggle in the bottom-left corner.
- On the Details tab, complete the fields you need — contact, administrative, tax and business details, and general notes.
- Click Save.
✔ Tip: Client general notes are separate from the General Notes field on individual returns. Use client notes for information about the client as a whole, and return notes for information specific to one return.
The Address Details Tab
Each client can hold multiple addresses. For each address you can set:
- Address type — choose the type of address from the dropdown. This is required.
- From and to dates — the period the address applies to.
- Default contact address — mark one address as the client's default contact address.
⚠ Important: Addresses can only be added once the client record has been saved. When creating a new client, the Address Details tab asks you to save the client record first.
Adding an address
- Open the client and go to the Address Details tab.
- Click Add.
- Select the address type and enter the address.
- Enter the from and to dates if applicable.
- Tick Default Contact Address if this should be the client's main contact address.
- Save the address. It appears in the address list.
Editing or removing an address
- On the Address Details tab, find the address in the list.
- Click Edit to change the details, or Remove to take the address off the list.
- Save your changes.
⚠ Important: If you have unsaved changes on the Details tab, BrightTax will ask you to confirm undoing them before the address action goes ahead. Save the Details tab first if you want to keep those changes.
ℹ Note: If a colleague has already removed an address you are trying to edit or remove, BrightTax will let you know and refresh the address list.
